Abstract:
Solid waste management & disposal are both an urban and rural problems. Every person is a generator and hence a contributor to the problem. To generate waste is natural; everyone who consumes generates waste by default. But, to manage & dispose the waste generated is another issue. This study has been carried out in New Delhi, the capital of India, located in the Northern region. This objective is to seek innovative methods to address the growing issue in waste management of New Delhi.
The findings revealed that the majority of public in New Delhi, exhibit concern about the rise in pollution levels including health & hygiene problems caused by poor solid waste management around the city. The first step of waste management, sorting (of the solid waste), was found rarely practiced. Recycling & re-using were done, but were as low as 20-25% throughout the city and the citizens have altogether failed to reduce the amount of waste generated. There are also challenges of removing illegal dumping of solid waste practiced all around the city & limited resources to manage the volumes of waste. However, there are plans for more Landfills (A place for garbage disposal), launch of new programs for e-waste management and awareness – making a way to deal with the challenges.
The study led to a Business Solution, a PPP Business Model to address the urgent need. The solution suggests a collective improvised system involving citizens, governments & corporate together. An enterprise to innovate the waste management facilities in New Delhi is proposed. Technologies like small scale (In-city) Waste-to-energy plants, Garbage powered trucks & e-resource (garbage) management, is proposed. This model won’t only solve the problem of waste management & rising pollution of New Delhi, rather, create a new sustainable industry dealing with waste to energy.
